Beauty And The Beast Appreciation Post.

Hello everyone, hope you’re well. This post is going to be a Beauty And The Beast Appreciation post!

Does anyone know the original story? Well I do! It’s still to this day, one of my favourite fairytales that isn’t from Hans Christian Andersen.

This was a fairytale written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740. It was a short story published in a French magazine. The short synopsis is that the Beast was cursed by an evil fairy because when he became of age, he refused her advances. The only way to break the curse was for someone to fall in love with him in his beastly form. Now Beauty was a merchant’s daughter who became poor. The merchant lost his riches when some of his ships were seized. As time passes, the merchant is advised that one of his ships were brought back and he could go and he would be rich again. He asks Beauty what she would like for him to bring back, she only requests for a rose that isn’t grown in their part of the world. Beauty was part of six siblings. Who were spoiled and bullied Beauty. They all asked for materialistic things. When it didn’t work out for the merchant. He was upset. Whilst on his way home, he stumbles upon a palace that opens the door to him. He is given food and shelter for the night. The next morning when he’s about to leave. He spots a beautiful rose garden. He picks one for Beauty, at least she’d get her present he thought. Then he meets the beast who is so angry that he wants him dead. The merchant bargains with him. In order to have the rose, he needs to return it with one of his children. Namely Beauty. He didn’t want to, but in the end Beauty found out the bargain and offered to go. When she did, the beast said that now she was in charge of his house and he would be her servant. He fulfilled anything she had desired. Food, books and conversation. He asked her to marry him quite regularly. She always turned him down. She thought of him dearly but only as a friend. After a few months she missed her family so she asked to go back, the beast said it would be fine. So long as she was back within the week. So off she went with the magic looking glass that could show her the beast and a ring that could return her. She goes home and sees her family. Her siblings convince her to stay an additional day. She is overwhelmed with the love she receives from her siblings that she agrees. On the eighth day, she checked up on the beast only to find him dying of a broken heart. Quick as a heartbeat she returns to him apologising and saying she loves him. And as for the rest, well you know how it ends. So the synopsis was quite a long one…haha.

This may not be the exact story everyone knows and loves but its a beautiful story. There is a lot more to it than I have written. But it is a story that gets retold countless times. The most recent one being the live action film with Emma Watson as Belle. There is also a series called Once Upon A Time where Belle is in love with her version of the beast – I won’t say anymore in case you want to watch it.
I’ve been reading a loose retelling of the fairytale. The A Court Of Thorns And Roses Trilogy by Sarah J Maas. Whilst I am waiting on the tied book to come out. I have come across a couple of retellings that I’ll read in between. One is The Beast Within by Serena Valentino and the second is A Tale As Old As Time by Liz Braswell. I also bought a colouring book of the same theme. So for at least the next couple of weeks I’ll be fully immersed in the world of Beauty And The Beast! Also, I would hope to actually go and see the film too! I can’t wait!

What’s your favourite fairytale?
